SAA AGM and Conference

SAA 2025 Conference and AGM
Remai Modern, Saskatoon SK
May 1-3, 2025

Value of architecture

This year’s conference will serve as a dynamic platform for conversation amongst architects and industry peers, on the value of architecture.

Architecture transcends the mere act of building; it is a critical discipline that mediates between history, culture, economy, and the human condition.  Embedded within the built environment is an intricate dialogue between materiality and meaning, form and function, permanence, and transformation. As contemporary society faces unprecedented environmental, social, and economic challenges, the question of architecture’s intrinsic and extrinsic value demands renewed interrogation.

Architecture has embodied shifting paradigms of power, ideology, and aesthetics, serving as both a repository of cultural memory and a catalyst for progress. Operating at the intersection of artistic expression and spatial logic, questioning the boundaries between the tangible and the theoretical, it has the capacity to influence patterns of urbanization, labor, and capital, shaping cities and infrastructures that define modern life. Herein lies the value of architecture, structuring experience, fostering inclusivity or exclusion, and bearing the responsibility of shaping equitable and resilient communities.

By examining these dimensions in concert, we may elucidate architecture’s evolving role in shaping human experience. In an era of profound global flux, the imperative to critically reassess architecture’s value—both as a discipline and as a practice—becomes ever more pressing.
